AR application for Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

A Venetian palace in the middle of Boston, Gardner's home is now a museum displaying her impressive, eclectic collection of European, American and Asian art, including sculpture, paintings, furniture, ceramics and textiles. Visitors can stroll or rest in a spectacular skylit courtyard filled with plants and flowers.

Pain points for Visitors

  • Map and guide laminated cards are not intuitive, visitor lack of the information for artworks

  • Voice guide covers most collections in the room without detailed explanation for each work

  • Many collections are forbidden to touch and close and the dim environment causes the less enjoyable experience

  • Some great artworks were stolen with just empty frames remaining, but people want to know and see them again

  • No communication and interaction, visitors will feel bored in such a quiet and behavior-limited environment, especially for children

Solutions

  • Utilize AR to make map and art information more intuitive and clear, reduce the environmental impact on visiting experience

  • Provide single voice guide for each artwork

  • Let people see the stolen artworks from the empty frames

  • Visitors can make communication and interaction with each other through mobile interface
